About the project
AMBITION is more than a documentary series. It is an act of historical recovery — and, where the record falls silent, a work of disciplined imagination.
The story of Joseph-Désiré Mobutu Sese Seko has been told many times, often badly. For decades, his legacy has been shaped by a tangle of rumor, propaganda, Cold War mythology, and the narrative convenience of those who came after him. What gets lost in the noise is the truth — and with it, the lessons that truth has to offer.
A commitment to primary sources. Every factual claim in AMBITION is traceable. We draw on declassified intelligence files, diplomatic cables, contemporaneous journalism, peer-reviewed scholarship, and extensive interviews with eyewitnesses — including former officials, journalists who covered the regime, members of the Mobutu family, and Congolese citizens whose lives were directly shaped by the events we depict. Where sources contradict one another, we present the contradiction. Where the historical record is genuinely uncertain, we say so plainly.
Where history meets storytelling. AMBITION is also a work of cinema, and certain sequences are dramatized — private moments, intimate conversations, the closed-door calculations that shaped a nation but were never recorded for posterity. These passages are crafted with poetic license. They are built from the same archives, the same testimonies, and the same scholarship as the rest of the series, and they are clearly framed as reconstructions rather than reportage. The goal is to render history with the emotional truth it deserves — to let viewers feel the weight of a decision, not merely read it.
A purpose beyond the past. This series exists for a reason. We believe the next generation — particularly the young people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the African continent more broadly — deserves to engage with their history on honest terms. Mobutu's life is, above all else, a study in decision-making: the small choices that compound into power, the convictions that calcify into ideology, and the moments where ambition outruns wisdom. To understand his rise and fall is to understand something essential about how nations are made and unmade.
A series about consequence. At every turn, AMBITION asks the same question: what was decided, and what did that decision cost? It is in the answers — patient, evidenced, and dramatized only where dramatization serves understanding — that we hope viewers will find not only a story worth knowing, but a framework for thinking about leadership, power, and responsibility long after the credits roll.
